We all get to a point in our relationships where we begin to wonder if we've found The One- the one we want to spend the rest of our lives with. Some would say that to even ask yourself that question is to point to the fact that they are not The One, but that's not true. It can be very difficult in this world of constant relationship advice to have any confidence in the idea of The One. Divorce rates are sky-high, marriage isn't required for kids anymore, and more and more people seem to have given up on the idea of lifelong companionship. But, there are still many people who have successful long-term relationships and you can certainly be one of them.
What Makes You Think They're The One?
If you've only been dating a few months, it's probably too early to tell if they are The One. Studies show that the surge of hormones and the rush of dating someone new last for several months, and it's impossible to tell your lifelong compatibility during that time. If this is you, you probably need to give the relationship more time before trying to determine if they are The One.
Do You Have Long-Term Compatibility?
One of the most important markers for success in a relationship is how much you have in common. Do you come from similar backgrounds and do you have similar goals? While opposites may attract, people who find one another's interests boring are going to end up finding the relationship boring as well. And it's important to know if they feel the same way as you do about the relationship. Not just big questions, like marriage and kids, but also little ones like, what time do you like to go to bed at night. If you find you're still in love with someone after discovering all their flaws and differences, then you've probably found The One.
